I've been out on my book tour for a few days now and, simultaneously, my father has been posting lots of photos from his childhoor on Facebook. I love looking at old family photos but this one above really struck a chord. No one remembers exactly what this event was, but the people in the photo are my uncle Peter and my Grandmother Jane. I can't stop looking at this photo. They both look like movie stars and my grandmother's outfit is beyond fabulous.
A part of me has always idealized New England preppy style and Yankee sensibilities and the Terry family has both in spades. My grandmother Jane was not the warmest woman but I loved her. She was always positive and upbeat, surrounded by a family of sarcastic, snobby cynics, myself included.
Do you have a style idol in your family?
I can't prevent hunting at this picture. They both await similar show stars and my gran's dress is beyond fabulous.

What a great picture! I'm having trouble imagining someone who is positive and upbeat, yet not warm, but will take your word on that. :) Looking forward to enjoying your newest book!

Oh my god, that picture is nostalgia-in a thousand words... Everything is just right-it looks like a scene form a movie-I assumed it was contemporary (retro occasion + instagram) when I saw it. My style inspiration is my mum. I have this picture of us together back when I was 1 or 2 and she's wearing a fabulous yellow chiffon sari with massive red and orange circles on it. Superseventies style (even though it was the eighties by then, she kept the lean elongated silhouette and warm colour pallette)..
